As coatings manufacturers face rising expectations for durability, natural aesthetics and lower-VOC technologies, Grace helps formulators solve complex performance challenges with engineered silica-based solutions.
Released By W. R. Grace & Co.
September 23, 2026
The coatings industry is evolving quickly, with formulators under pressure to deliver finishes that meet rising expectations for performance, appearance, and sustainability. Dr. Ziniu Yu, Technical Services Manager, Coatings, W. R. Grace & Co. (Grace), discusses current industry trends, the science behind high-performance coatings additives, and how Grace is helping formulators address today’s most persistent challenges.
Q: What trends are driving technology innovation in the coatings market?Dr. Ziniu Yu: One of the most important trends driving innovation in the coatings market is the shift from traditional solvent-based systems to waterborne and radiation-curable coatings. Even as the industry pushes toward low- and no-VOC technologies and a reduced carbon footprint, manufacturers face growing pressure to meet customer demand for natural-looking wood, cabinetry, furniture, and flooring surfaces. That combination is encouraging formulators to rethink how they achieve matte finishes, durability, and clarity all at the same time in a coating system.
Luxury vinyl flooring is another important driver for new coatings technology. The quality of imitation wood surfaces has improved significantly, and vinyl flooring has become a popular alternative because it offers strong water resistance and can be used in demanding spaces such as kitchens and bathrooms. Coatings must do more than protect the surface; they also need to preserve the look and feel of natural wood.
On the manufacturing side, we’re seeing companies focus on reducing production cycle times and improving overall process efficiency to lower their carbon footprint. As a result, UV/EB coil coating technology is gaining traction among coatings formulators because of its high curing efficiency and reduced energy consumption.
Q: What challenges are formulators facing as they develop high-performance coatings?Yu: In the past, formulators often had to choose between performance and appearance, but today a successful coating must deliver both. For example, customers expect wood and vinyl flooring with a deep, low-gloss finish that not only looks natural, but also withstands scratches, abrasion, stains, cleaning chemicals and daily wear and tear from people, pets and furniture. Clarity is equally important, as coatings should protect the surface without creating haze that hides the wood grain or makes the product look cloudy.
That balance can be difficult to achieve in low-gloss coatings because matting agents create a micro-rough surface that diffuses light and reduces gloss. If the matting agent is not engineered for the coating system, it can compromise film properties such as transparency, chemical resistance, scratch resistance or burnishing resistance. The solution is to select an additive that helps achieve the desired aesthetic without forcing tradeoffs in real-world performance.
Q: Why is matte performance such a persistent challenge in waterborne coatings?Yu: Matte performance in waterborne coatings presents a challenge because formulators must balance matting efficiency, clarity and durability within the same system. Waterborne systems are attractive because they can support lower-VOC formulation goals, but deep-matte waterborne coatings can be technically demanding. Traditional inorganic silica matting agents may provide strong matting efficiency and good clarity, but they can be vulnerable to water, stains or burnishing in certain systems, which can impact the coating film integrity. Organic matting agents, such as waxes, may improve stain resistance, but they can reduce transparency and obscure the natural beauty of wood. As a result, the structure, surface treatment and compatibility of the matting agent play a critical role in overall coating performance.
Grace developed the SYLOID® AQ silica series to help address that compromise. These silica matting agents are designed for premium waterborne wood coatings and combine the benefits of engineered silica with organic surface modification. SYLOID® AQ 800 is engineered for superior matting efficiency, while SYLOID® AQ 880 is designed for enhanced chemical and burnish resistance. Both are intended to provide excellent clarity in clear coatings, making them well suited for finishes where preserving the appearance is essential.
Another reason waterborne coatings can be challenging to produce is dispersibility. It is well known that silica matting agents often require high shear forces and extended mixing times for proper incorporation into waterborne coating formulations. To address this, Grace developed the hydrogel-based SYLOID® W silica series, which offers excellent ease of dispersion in coating systems. With water pre-saturated within the porous silica structure, formulators can significantly reduce incorporation time and improve processing efficiency.
Q: How do Grace coatings additives help customers improve both processing and finished-film performance?Yu: For formulators, processing performance is just as important as finished-film properties. Designed to help improve manufacturing efficiency, Grace’s coatings portfolio is built around engineered synthetic amorphous silica and silicate technologies, backed by deep expertise in silica chemistry, particle engineering and surface modification. We can control for particle size, pore volume, pore structure and surface treatment, so we can tailor additives to meet different formulation needs. In practice, that means helping customers achieve gloss control, durability, corrosion protection, and other functionalities without overcomplicating their systems or compromising finished-film performance.
One example is Grace’s SYLOID® RAD silica series for UV-cured coatings, which was developed to address challenges such as viscosity increase during roller coating and the need for efficient matting. The series is available in multiple particle sizes, enabling formulators to blend grades and target specific gloss or sheen requirements. Lower viscosity impact can help support faster line speeds and greater formulation flexibility – all while maintaining desired finished-film appearance.
Q: What role does technical support play in coatings innovation?Yu: Technical support is critical for coatings innovation because every formulation is different. The additive that performs best in one system may need to be adjusted for another binder, application method, target gloss level or end-use requirement. Grace customers benefit fromdecades of experience in material science, silica engineering, and coatings applications, along with global technical service and manufacturing support. Our global technical customer service teams work directly with customers to understand their formulation goals, recommend appropriate additive solutions, and help translate lab-scale results into commercial performance. That combination allows us to work closely with customers as they evaluate additives, troubleshoot formulation issues, and scale solutions.
Our role extends beyond delivering products to helping formulators identify the right solution for their specific performance targets. Whether the challenge is matting efficiency, stain resistance, moisture control, corrosion protection, dispersion, viscosity stability or supply reliability, Grace can support customers with a broad portfolio and deep application knowledge.
Q: Looking ahead, what should coatings formulators prioritize?Yu: Formulators should prioritize solutions that help them meet evolving market expectations without accepting unnecessary compromises. Sustainability, low-VOC technologies, durability and natural aesthetics will continue to influence the coatings market, while productivity and ease of processing remain essential qualities. The best additives will help bridge those needs by enabling coatings that are easier to formulate, easier to apply and better able to withstand real-world use.
That is where Grace is focused: helping customers create coatings that look better, last longer, and align with their specific requirements. By combining material science expertise with a broad portfolio of silica-based additives, Grace gives formulators the tools to design coatings for tomorrow’s performance standards.
Q: Where do you think the industry is heading next, and how do Grace’s solutions reflect that?Yu: The industry is moving toward coating solutions that help formulators do more at once: improve performance, support sustainability goals, simplify processing, and meet evolving regulatory expectations. Customers increasingly require coatings that deliver natural aesthetics, durability, clarity, chemical resistance, and production efficiency without forcing unnecessary tradeoffs. Grace’s silica-based technologies are designed to reflect that direction by giving formulators greater flexibility to balance appearance, application performance and long-term durability.
For waterborne wood coatings, the SYLOID® AQ series helps customers achieve deep-matte, natural-looking finishes while maintaining clarity, stain resistance, and durability. The products can be used individually or blended to adjust matting efficiency, smoothness, chemical resistance, and burnish resistance. Grace’s LUDOX® colloidal silica can help improve dirt pickup resistance, scratch resistance, and anti-blocking properties, which are critical for both industrial and architectural coating applications.
For UV-cured coatings, the SYLOID® RAD series supports the shift toward radiation-curable technologies by helping formulators achieve low-gloss finishes while managing viscosity and maintaining strong application performance, which is especially important in flat-stock applications where roller coating efficiency and coat-weight control influence productivity and consistency.
